Driver Regiment Insignia on an M33

Very unusual. The fregio itself is the earlier version for the automobilisti (transportation), not artieri who are engineers. If original (and I can't answer that), likely made between 1933–1936 (after which the new fregio was used). If original, possibly a parade helmet. Pista! Jeff

The Failed Defense of Bardia, January 3, 1941

I agree with Giova in that the switch line fell before the posts on the south west corner of the perimeter. It is possible that the survivors from the switch line and artillery support positions retreated south to the surviving posts. Pista! Jeff

    Velivoli MACCHI

A very nice find Jim. This interested in aviation should take a look. I wish they had included some drawings of the concept aircraft in the rear of the booklet. Pista! Jeff

The Naval War in the Mediterranean, 1940-1943

Greene did two handbooks. The first was undated but was likely published in the mid-1980s given the planned publication of vol. II in 1988-89 as mentioned in the introduction. The second was an expanded version published in 1990 and likely replaced the idea of a volume II. Both were...

The Naval War in the Mediterranean, 1940-1943

My copy was published 1998 by Chatham Publishing in the UK. Given the write-up on the NIP doesn't mention it is a revised/updated copy, I would assume it is a straight reprint. Pista! Jeff

    Invasion: Malta

There are many decisions that are made at the tactical level that are executed within a period of 8 hours. The fact that Wargames' design is based on a battalion and below scale and the combat resolution is at that level means that there are many decisions that happen within that time span...

    Looking to research a Piastrino

I delayed answering in the hope that someone with experience in this type of research would respond. I can't offer much as seeking POW records is something I don't normally do. Google 'WW2 POW records' and there are quite a few hits. Give them a try. Pista! Jeff

    Official histories

It looks like the SME has taken the free pdf. books down. It appears they are working with Rodorigo Editore, a publishing house. However, that link is not working. I believe they are attempting to monetize the electronic books. Pista! Jeff

    Looking to research a Piastrino

Good day MedalMan90 There are no good websites to track an individual Italian soldier. Enlistment records are now held by the state archive of the province in which the individual was born. Family members can receive a copy of the individual's service record (foglio matricolare). There isn a...

    Invasion: Malta

Invasion: Malta hasn't been release (hopefully soon). I have it on preorder given my interest in Italian paratroops. I have exchanged emails with Vance, so have some sort of idea what the is doing. RE: Unit strengths. While strength are initially determined by quantifiable factors (strength...

    Nibeiwa Camp

I am sure those war-game pictures don't reflect the actual camp. I am also sure there must be arial photos of the camp taken by UK reece aircraft prior to the offensive. Finding someone who can research in the records at Kew would be my first try. Pista! Jeff

    Italian military garment?

Good day. E.I. is Esercito Italiano, which is the name of the postwar Italy Army. Lan is possibly lana (wool) and Pecci is possibly the manufacturer (this latter is a guess, Pecci makes wool fabric/yarns). TG is taglia (size). C.36240 is likely the stock number of the item. The date...

    POW camp of Coltano, Italy

From the little I could find, the camp was established by the Allies at the end of the war. Operated by the US, I would assume NARA would hold the records. Using 'Coltano POW camp in Italy' I got several hits on articles. I don't know if they would answer your questions. Pista! Jeff

    Battle of Mechilli-Derna January 1941

Toni While the XXVII is the correct number for the btg. mitr. from the d. f. «Brescia», that battalion wasn't at Derna. The btg. mitr. at Derna was the XVII btg. mitr. from the «Pavia». Both of the Italian histories have confused the two units. I believe this started as a typo (XVII and...
