Please could someone just give me a translation of the word "Artieri"
I'm assuming it's something to do with artillery.
Thanks.

Not really: the word having to do with Arty that you probably have in mind is ARTIGLIERE/I = Artilleryman/men.
Artiere is an engineering specialty and is nowadays (from 1950 onwards) called pionieri (pioneers). In poor words (very poor) the artieri/pionieri are those that build up things as opposed to guastatori that are those who blow up them
Best regards

only a note...there was an artieri company in each mixed engineer divisional battalion
artieri engineer battalions operated at Corps/Army level

I'm curious if the accurate U.S. equivalent would be the Combat Engineers.

Equivalent to Guastatori or to Pionieri (formerly Artieri)? IMHO Combat Engineers would suite pretty well to Guastatori. Not 100% sure though.
Best regards
