Italian merchant ships under Allied control - September 1943

Hello,

Maybe as a team work of our community we would be able to prepare a complete list of Italian merchant ships (over 100 GRT) which managed to get under Allied control after the Armistice. I tried to work on this in the last weeks and I managed to prepare a preliminary list which is definetely not the final one.

Please add any other vessels I missed. For sure I'm wrong in some cases so any corrections are more than welcome. In the next phase we can fill in some other details. At this moment I didn't include Regia Marina vessels (only that taken from trade) and merchant ships which came under Allied control in other way (like outside of Mediterranean, sunk and salvaged later on or seized later e.g. in the Adriatic while being already under German control). I hope you will find this as interesting topic and some of you would be happy to join me in my research.

Best regards,

Greg

Hi Greg,
Good luck with this project. I have looked at my books on the Regia Marina but unfortunately they do not cover the merchant ships. The nearest I could get was in Bragadin‘s Italian Navy in World War 2. In the armistice chapter he explains the allied instructions and responses in relation to the surviving Italian warships. Page 313 has a footnote stating, There were also no provisions for the ships of the merchant marine to be taken over by or rendered to the allies. Only the possibility of their requisition by the allies involved.
I fear that your project may be very challenging!
Regards,
Bob
