Anyone know why the Italians laid so few naval mines off Malta? I only count 100 in 1940 yet they scored two hits.

I measure mineable waters up to 84 miles ( 135 Km) east of Malta. No limit north, west, or south.

Pantellaria-Sicilia
On the nights of June 8/9 and 9/10, the mineships Scilla and Buccari, accompanied by the T-boat Altair, lay 640 mines each between Pantellaria and Sicily.
Lampedusa Kakernnah
On the night of June 9/10, the cruisers Da Barbiano (DivAdm. Marenco di Moriondo) and Cadorna, the destroyers Lanciere, Corazziere and the T-boats Polluce and Calipso lay 428 mines between Lampedusa and Kerkennah.
After an aborted operation, Scilla and Buccari lay another 800 mines with the T-boats Airone and Ariel on the night of June 11/12
