The regiment embarked in Palermo on 13 December 1940. At 10 am on the following day, 14 December, it set sail on the steamer "Marco Polo", escorted by 5 fighters, 2 cruisers and a reconnaissance aircraft. In the evening the steamers "Conte Rosso" and "Esperia" from Naples also joined the convoy with other troops on board traveling for the AS. At 15.00 on 15 December the convoy reached Tripoli.
