Hi, just found this forum and am eagerly reading threads - very informative!

I have a question regarding the name of the Italian Armed Forces in WW2.

So for Germany:

A. Wehrmacht -
1. Heer (army)
2. Kriegsmarine (navy)
3. Luftwaffe (air force)

For Italy:

A. ??? (maybe Comando Supremo?)
1. Esercito Italiano (???)(army)
2. Regia Marina (navy)
3. Regia Aeronautica (air force)

Can someone fill in the ???

Thanks!

- Jeff

Wehrmacht and Heer are one and the same.
Heer can be translated as "ground troops" and is still in use today with the modern German army.
Wehrmacht is the same as Heer, but was only used from 34 until 45.

The word you ar looking for is "Oberkomando der Wehrmacht" OHL (High Comand of the Armed forces) and yes, this equals the Italian "Comando Supremo"

Thanks for the answer, you've confirmed what I already know.

Wehrmacht = Armed Forces

'Comando Supremo' is the Italian equivalent to 'armed forces'?

I'm not talking about the organizational/command structure (OKW, OKH, etc).

What is the Italian word/name for its combined (army/navy/air force) armed forces?

Thanks!

the Italian equivalent to "armed forces" is "forze armate" (not so different, isn't it? 😉 ), the acronym is FF.AA.

during WWII Italian armed forces were formally:
Regio Esercito (RE) (royal army)
Regia Marina (RM) (royal navy)
Regia Aeronautica (RA) (royal air force)

Comando Supremo means literally Supreme HQ (logically, of armed forces) and it's equivalent to german OKW

What about the supreme headquarters of each force? Like this:

Oberkomando der Luftwaffe (OKL) = Superaero (?)

Oberkomando der Kriegsmarine (OKM) = Supermarina (?)

Oberkomando der Heer (OKH) = (??)

Can anyone answer?

Superesercito, Supermarina, Superaereo etc. were the conventional names, gathered from their telegrafic/fonograms address/call signs (indirizzo/nominativi di chiamata), and became the official names of said High Commands.

Best regards

To be complete the "Super-" is a short form for "Superiore" (Upper, High), so "comando superiore della Slovenia e Dalmazia" becomes Supersloda and so on...
