Graduated from the Royal Military Academy of Infantry and Cavalry in Modena. Captured by the Germans on 9 September 1943 and subsequently interned in Poland in the 64/Z concentration camp of Schokken where he remained until January 1945 when he was liberated by the Red Army and subsequently repatriated.
