Benito Mussolini formed the Italian Expeditionary Corps in Russia in June 1941. The mobile, corps sized unit is known as the Corpo di Spedizione Italiano in Russia (CSIR) in Italian. They arrived on the Eastern Front between July and August 1941 and initially fell under the German 11th Army. By 1942, the CSIR was upgraded to the Italian Army in Russia (Armata Italiana in Russia) or ARMIR.
